After Effects - Global Position

Retrieve the global position of a child layer. Apply the preset to the parented layer and a Point Controller will be applied that displays the global position of the layer.

Since the position values of a child don't change when the parent is animated, it makes it hard to utilize the child's position.  Global Position allows access to the position value regardless of how long your parenting chain is in length.
